Biota Water Samplers

Our Water Sampler Range

Our cost effective range of water samplers are designed to make capturing biological material from water faster, systematic and more accessible. Our solutions can be deployed for semi or fully automated sampling.

Biota Water Sampler 1

The WS1 is a single filter sampler with volume and pressure recording. Designed for portable use and spot checks, rated to depths of 10m* and operated through our network controller and/or bluetooth app.

Biota Water Sampler 12

The WS12 is a multi-filter sampler (12) designed to be deployed and remotely operated. Sampling can be triggered based on external sensors or remote/network commands. Preservation buffer maintains sample integrity.

Biota Water Sampler Stand

The WS1-S is a laboratory stand for the WS1. It retains all of the advantages of the WS1 whilst enabling the processing of collected water samples in a laboratory environment. The WS1 can be removed from the stand and used in the field.

Key Features

Our patent pending samplers vastly increase biological sample concentration over current methods whilst reducing consumable waste and risk of cross contamination.

  • Increased Biological Sample Yield
  • Rapid, Systematic & Accessible Sampling
  • Adaptive Sampling: Manual, Event and Sensor Triggering
  • Android App for instrumentation interaction and key parameter logging.
  • Deployable & Submersible, for in-situ sampling
  • Reduce Operator Fatigue

Core Sampling Technology

Our innovative, patent-pending sampling technology features a reciprocating positive displacement mechanism acting upon a disposable syringe fitted with a dual check valve and luer lock connector supporting multiple filter formats. This design allows us to precisely control the driving force on the plunger, optimizing sample volume throughput while minimizing pressure-related degradation of biological samples and preserving filter integrity.

With all wetted components being disposable, the risk of cross-contamination between samples is eliminated. Additionally, the sensing electronics for volume, flow rate, and pressure monitoring remain isolated from the sample, ensuring reliable, contamination-free performance.

The sampler can be handheld or deployed. When operating as a handheld sampler, thanks to its automated syringe action it reduces operator fatigue, further improving accessibility, inclusion and consistency over traditional sampling methods.

User Interface Software

Our samplers are Bluetooth enabled and operated via a dedicated Android app. The app provides complete control of the samplers as well as recording key sampling data such as accumulated volume and pressure. Stop conditions of time, max. pressure or volume can be set to allow consistency between samples.

The app also allows for sample organisation and management, allowing the user to log GPS coordinates and create sampling session names.

External and third party sensor data, such as sonde, imaging and audio, is also available through the app.

Sample Preservation

Our samplers support many forms of sample preservation. When operated in handheld mode, the app allows the flushing and drying of the filter for easier sample preservation by the operator. When operated in stand-alone mode, sample preservation modules perform the flushing, drying and application of your chosen preservation buffer.

Adaptive Sampling Concept

While the samplers can be used in manual mode for ad-hoc or spot check sampling their true power is in their ability to be deployed, networked and armed waiting for the most impactful moment to sample. This Adaptive Sampling allows dynamic triggering to be configured. Triggers may consist of any external data source, such as data from a network (cloud or API), sensor or instruments within the network, for example, sondes or flow cytometers.

When adaptive triggers are coupled with the sample preservation this allows for a truly powerful system, capturing the most insightful samples at the optimal moment, with the benefit of collecting the preserved Sample when convenient and/or safe to do so i.e. when a flood has subsided.
